Over
the past several years, Lionsgate has emerged
as the biggest, most diverse independent studio
in the industry. Since 2004, Lionsgate has grossed
over $750 million at the domestic box office,
with an eclectic release schedule led by the record-breaking
$120 million gross on FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and the
$87 million gross on SAW 2. In addition, they
released CRASH, which earned six Academy Award
nominations and won the Best Picture award, as
well as the two hugely successful Tyler Perry
movies (MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION and DIARY
OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN). In 2006, Lionsgate will
be releasing 20 movies under Rothenberg’s
purview.
Prior to Lionsgate, Rothenberg was the President
of Domestic Distribution at Artisan Entertainment,
where he distributed the indie phenomenon THE
BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, as well as arthouse staples
like BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
and PI. Previously, he held top level distribution
posts at Savoy Entertainment and The Samuel Goldwyn
Company, where he worked with such distinguished
directors as Richard Attenborough, Ang Lee, Anthony
Minghella, Kenneth Branagh, John Sayles and David
Lynch. A 26 year industry veteran, Rothenberg
has released over 400 movies, including more than
a dozen Academy Award winners. He is a member
of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,
and a board member of Variety – The Children’s
Charity. He frequently lectures on movie distribution
at UCLA and USC. He is an honors graduate of Stanford
University.
